Dubai Streetfood Awards 2018 celebrates the growing eat-on-the-street trend
Whether it’s a street food festival, a quick snack on the go, or a special trip out to one of the Last Exit venues; Dubai loves its street food.
You could, of course, argue that eating al fresco is about as traditionally Emirati as you can get – the Bedouin are renowned for great hospitality, not great dining rooms. Pearl fishermen ate where and when they could, and the greatest way to eat local food is with your hands, in the desert.
The new awards, created by Catchme Events and Market Buzz, aim to recognise and award talented home-grown street food vendors. Through the awards, voted for by a jury of leading food bloggers and entrepreneurs, the organisers hope to raise the profile of street easts across the region.
Sherif Abaza, co-founder of Catchme Events, and co-founder of the “Streetnights” event in Dubai for the past three years, said, “Street food is an integral part of every person’s food journey, no matter where they come from. In this melting pot that is the UAE, we are spoilt for choice, whether it’s a beloved but ubiquitous burger, shawarma, falafel or churros. Over the past few years, the street food scene in Dubai has blossomed, and it’s time for some serious recognition, which is why we wanted to introduce the Dubai Street Food Awards.”
The awards will be judged by a panel of food influencers, bloggers and writers.

The criteria for nominations are:
- Must be a homegrown brand: it can be regional (anywhere in the Middle East) but can’t be part of an international franchise or have a hotel affiliation
- Must be in operation for a minimum of six months prior to the date of the awards
- Must be a registered UAE business
Nominations will be judged in ten categories with an additional category for fan favourites.
The categories are: Best Sandwich, Best Wrap, Best Snack / Side Dish, Best Vegetarian Dish, Best Dessert, Best Main Dish, Best Original Drink, Best Use of Social Media, Best New Street Food Concept, Best Food Truck, and Fan Favorite (the People’s Choice).
All submissions will be online. All nominations will be initially screened for eligibility according to the criteria. The final eligible submissions will be submitted to the jury for their evaluation and scored over two rounds: first based on the nomination documents. Finally winners will be chosen based on a final visit to the short list and a tasting.
Mita Srinivasan, director at Market Buzz and a community supporter, said, “We are very lucky to have the support of some of the stalwarts in the food blogging and reporting sector, as well as entrepreneurs that know what it is to set up a food business and make it work. The jury will remain anonymous to make sure that it is fair throughout the process. We will reveal the jurors once the winners have been selected around the end of February 2018.”
A final shortlist in each category will be announced in January 2018, when the second round of judging will commence. Voting in the Fan Favourite category will open in February, asking for votes from some of the judges’ favourites. Winners will be announced during the Dubai Food Festival.
